Despite the crisis that has engulfed the euro area, and loss of jobs that led to the mass of the European Commission has seen fit to publish a document that directly attacks the rights of workers, unemployment benefits and in general terms, the already very weakened social model in Europe.
The document, entitled The Annual Growth Survey, was adopted by the Commission on January 11 under intense pressure by Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso and will also be presented at the meeting of the European Council on 4 February. Although not a legal test, the survey gives a clear indication of the roadmap that the Commission intends to take.
Requests the Commission to Member States:
increase indirect taxation, while weakening the progressive structure of taxes,
encourage longer working hours;
raise the retirement age and further privatization of pension schemes;
weaken the legislation employment protection; PES President Poul Nyrup Rasmussen, said: "The document shows that Mr Barroso has not learned the lesson of 2010, neither recognized the inherent weaknesses of neo-liberal model that caused the economic crisis. Instead, it outlines the his delusional belief that the road to economic recovery is based on more stringent measures for those who already suffer most from the effects of the recession. " Speaking to the European Parliament on January 19, Socialist MEP Stephen Hughes (UK) said: "The first survey of annual growth is a frontal assault against time to be determined and is socially and economically essential workers' rights, and against the concept same bargaining collective. "He went on to say that the text, if validated by the European Council," is the worst I can think of in the current context. It will not only reveal the fallacy of his statement, but it will deeply damage the European project ".
The European Trade Union Confederation (ETUC) has strongly condemned the text. In a very poignant letter to Commission President Jose Manuel Barroso, Secretary General ETUC, John Monks, said the text, "an attack" social Europe "and is in stark contrast to the more relaxed viewing, without interfering with the rapid increase in the levels of top pay, including bonuses bank." The PES is committed to putting highlight the dangers of text in its European and national networks. The Board of PES in December, was adopted as an alternative solution more socially balanced, under the banner of "European employment and social progress of the Covenant".
